In September 2019, Mountain Hardwear returned to “where it all began,” sending a peer-voted group of six employees to embark on a ten-day trek to Everest Base Camp and meet up with a team of climbers—including company president Joe Vernachio and athletes Tim Emmett and Garrett Madison—as they prepared for their chance to reach the highest summit on Earth. They field-tested products along the way, learned firsthand about the community that enables climbers in Nepal, connected with the places that inspired the
brand’s existence, as well as connected with each other, bringing a stronger foundation back to Mountain Hardwear’s home base.

Mountain Hardwear has been making gear for the high mountains for over a quarter-century, yet most of our team has never seen an 8,000m peak up close. We felt that had to change… Here’s what our trekking team found on their 100-mile journey through the Khumbu Valley.

We all accept some level of risk when we go to the mountains, especially the big mountains, and sometimes we become aware of a significant hazard before it unleashes its fury. If we’re lucky, we get the chance to make a rational decision before disaster strikes. Our climbing team was lucky.
